Haha I could talk about this all day! As a Physio I see a lot of fancy workouts which can be good, but the 4 core movements I’m always pulling people back to for functional strength in the water are the squat, deadlift/adaptations posterior pulling movements, bench and row/pullup. In the long term these are golden, fantastic global compound movements and will keep strength in the body for a long time to come, especially if we can load heavier safely over time (should always be looking to progress over longer intervals) and increase our range through these movements. There’s supplementary stuff like the loaded lumbar extension, rotator cuff exercises and core work that definitely has a great place here, but best bang for buck will be those core movements. They’re not super fun though, so that’s where classes and getting some fancy stuff can make the work more engaging.
