Hi. When riding long boards I always use a calf leash. They are sometimes hard to find, so I keep spares, just in case. As I could not bear the thought of all the issues a 9ft+ ankle leash can cause! You should try one. It will probably solve most of your issues. They can still get tangled up in your toes every now and then, but much less. I think a well known brand that specializes in good longboard leashes is also worth spending a few more bucks on, rather than some generic leash. When you are not using it, just keep it loose in the board bag or try hanging it from something so that there is no memory in the leash from being wrapped around the board. This can cause it to want to make loops in the leash which can catch your feet, board or legs in the water. For me, the placement of the leash on the upper end of calf just below my knee is also important. If the back of my knee is 0 degrees and the front of my knee is 180 degrees and the outside side of my knee is 90 degrees. I place my leash so that the leg-rope sticks out at a 45 degree angle. This way it has less chance of getting tangled in your legs and feet when you are working your magic 😎. I hope that makes sense and can help you. It has worked for me.
