  • Longboarding in Wave Pools

Posted by paul on June 14, 2025 at 1:56 pm

Been noticing a few members posting clips from wave pools around the world so I figured this could be a fun topic.

Are there wave pools out there that are well suited for longboarding and might even be worth a trip to surf?

I am in New York I have surfed Skudin Surf a few times. It is located inside a waterpark in a shopping mall! It’s great to be in inside with warm water and air during winter and offers enough time for a couple of turns. Pretty fun if you are in the area. The wave is pretty short and seems better suited for a shortboard or midlength. Also great for beginners, but doesn’t seem long enough to work on cross steps or noserides, etc. unless you are already proficient.

    How about you?

Any pools you have surfed on a longboard?

Any pools you would like to visit one day?

I’d like to try the new wave pool in Palm Springs. I haven’t seen much longboarding footage from pools, but it seems like it would be fun. I might try a 9′ board or something smaller than what I use in the ocean though.

My buddy enjoyed Palm Springs, but he rode a short board. There is a wave garden opening in Virginia Beach later this year.

That’s a bit of a drive for me but could make a fun road trip one day. Curious to see how the wave looks for longboards once it opens.

I’ve only surfed at UrbnSurf which I believe is the ‘wave garden technologies’ and whilst fun probably not the best and most suited for longboards. They lack a consistent peel and ebb and flow a lot in their speed I think to optimise for bigger lips for shortboarders to hit then wind their cutbacks. So fun but not the best for the longboard – I think you guys are getting 2 new wavepools near you if I heard correctly?!?

The only pool near NY I have heard about is a private country club membership type pool called “Crest”. I doesn’t seem that it will be open to the public but maybe that will change. There is a wave garden opening in Virginia Beach too. That’s a far drive but doable for a weekend. Is there another northeast US pool you have heard about?

Hey Paul, I’ve surfed Skudin Pool once a week since November of last year. I’ve been working on short boarding there. While it’s not a perfect wave, it’s been a lifesaver for me to be able to get out and surf. I know we are neighbors and have surfed Monroe together, but at different times. One day I will meet you there 😀. Waco has a really good longboard wave. There are six wave pools coming to the Dallas area, as well.

Surfing skudin weekly sounds nice! The number of waves you can get in 2 hours is crazy. I’ve been surfing before or after work or on the weekends a handful of times this summer, using the Lincoln Surfline camera (or the occasional iPhone video from my wife) to get videos for community feedback here. Hope to see you out there. Look out for my baby blue Bing Beacon and say hello!

I’m usually out early mornings either at Lincoln or Monroe. I will be on my aqua Bing Trimulux (well, at least until my custom magenta McTavish arrives. I’ll be looking for you!!

    Went to AZ revel surf.

I think wave pools are great to dial in to a skill you want to get down or break bad habits cause of the video film you get with it. I didn’t realize how my legs were so Squirrley till I went now back in the ocean dialing in on keeping that at bay

Such a good point. Getting film is so so helpful haha, a lot of the time the way something looks isn’t how it feels, and its great to connect the dots!

As we lovingly call it Oside. Its a hard beach break. Very slammed waves can be brutal. Caitlyn Simmers. WSL is ftom Oside. Usually short board south side and north side longboard. Harbor is both but all beach break. $$$ to the community with housing etc will have access to all amenities. https://wavepoolmag.com/confirmed-oceanside-wave-pool-moving-ahead/

Yeah okay!!! Yeah I’ve surfed oceanside small one day with a bunch of mates and had a blast, on that day it was only about 1-2ft and super fun for the log, surfed the peak way over to the right if you’re standing looking at the beach, hope to get back there at some point!

This wave pool looks amazing for a log, but I think it’s in Brazil.

A new one opened up in Virginia Beach too! I haven’t seen any longboard clips yet but it looks fun too.

    Here’s a brasil pool clip.

My friend Marv (Marvin Amend, I think you know him @BenConsidine ), German Longboard Champion learnt to surf in Munich wavepool and competes internationally (was in El Salvador this year). He loves the wavepool 🤣

That’s wild. Like a real life Rick Kane story from the North Shore movie.

@wally-lippincott i just booked a few intermediate sessions for the Atlantic surf park in August!!! I booked 2 rights and 1 left over 2 days. Any advice?

Probably going to rent a longboard there. They have a FireWire Singleton model which looks like it should work well. Other option is putting the boards on the roof but it’s a long drive so I’m a little nervous.

I just got back from the Atlantic Surf Park in Virginia Beach. I surfed the intermediate right and left sessions on a really fun 9’4 WRV rental and the “advanced turns right” on a mid length. We had an absolute blast! The intermediate was super fun on a longboard and was definitely noseride-able and good to practice steps in the slightly steeper sections. I think regular sessions on the same wave with some feedback in between would be super helpful for dialing in new skills. It’s also great just to visit for a day or two. If you have a chance I’d definitely recommend it!

For anyone who finds themselves in Scotland, we have a WaveGarden pool – called Lost Shore Surf Resort (https://www.lostshore.com ) Lots of wave settings – wha5 is suitable for a longboard will only depend on skill level. It’s a great facility for an area with fickle waves, but be warned- it’s freaking cold in winter (water temp is regulated by air temp). At 7 to 8C, the ocean is warmer in winter than the pool!
