  • One handed pop-up

I was just wondering if the standard pop-up can be modified somehow to a one handed pop-up for someone who has either an arm injury or can’t use one hand. I was wondering how Bethany Hamilton does it And how that could be adapted for longboarding.

    Thoughts especially @BenConsidine and @Tommy.TenToes?

I remember watching a Bethany documentary years ago and at first her dad installed a rope on the deck so she could hold on with one hand and get leverage. I would think with some trial and error you can figure out something that might work for you on land, and then try in the water. The pop up style where you slide up the back foot, plant it, and then plant the front foot may be easier than a more explosive movement. I saw an old YouTube video on “surf with ruby” channel where she breaks down three pop up types, including the back foot slide and the knee pop up. Not ideal, but may help you figure out a way to keep surfing stay in the water.

Thank you for the reply, @paul.

Curious as to hand placement with the good hand for the pop-up by the way.

When I’ve had my arm in a cast I’ve ended up popping using my good hand right in the middle of the deck!

Was never able to do it in surf of any decent size though…
