Single Fin Screw Bolt – any experience with it?
Posted by Sam Eyde on September 10, 2024 at 3:10 pmHave any of you used the easy, tool-free, secure fin screw solution? Where you can change the position of your
fin forwards or backwards in the box, by hand – even smack in the middle
of your surfing session. I can’t find any physical surf shop that sells it, though I have an online seller that sells them, so will order and try it out.But have any of you used brass or stainless steel bolts? The one that comes with the single fin you need a tool to move it, which is cumbersome and very old fashion.

Hi – if you are talking about that plastic lever thing that holds in single fins I haven’t tried it but two of my buddies have it and they love it. They always take out the fin in between surfs. I use the steel bolt/screw that you can tighten by hand and have not had an issue. But I usually leave my fin in in between surfs so I’m not removing or adjusting often.

It should be ok, but it is really optional. @wannasurfsome is quite right with the conclusion. If you usually leave your fin in between surfs, don’t bother. Bolts are more reliable. If you hit something with the fin, there is always a risk that it will pop out. You will not lose the fin, but you have to go out to put it back.
In short, it may be good for people who do not like unscrewing the fin every time they go out and who have to do it for a reason.peace, bro

I got to use the fin jack thing like 6 months ago and was quite impressed by it. I actually reached out to them to see if we can stock them in our shop (shop coming soon). They sent me a few samples and they do work great. However, I wanted to launch them in conjunction with our new fin we have coming out as well. Our new fin has the pin in the back and screw on the front which we did so you have extra room to put the fin farther back in the box. But the fin jack doesn’t really work with those. Kinda impossible without the leverage that the fin rake gives you. So if it’s the usual screw in the back fin, then they’re a solid option

Exciting about longboard sessions fins, can’t wait to see them and the different locking mechanisms.

Here’s the website for the finjak. I’ve used it before and it definitely works, but I got a pack of 3 or so and not all of them worked perfectly. I think it depends on the fin too, some fins snap in perfect and others seem to not trigger the mechanism. I guess all fins are a little different. And yeah to second Brian, they don’t work so well with fins that have the bolt in the front. Still possible, but not easy to trigger the mechanism and the quick release function won’t work… or I guess it might, but I don’t think that’s what its designed for.

Here’s a video where JJ Wessels says he doesn’t put a screw in his fins so he can adjust them in the water. Most of my fins wouldn’t stay in the box without a shim or a screw so I don’t really trust it… Having a fin sponsor might make that a little more practical haha. Don’t want to lose one!

Very cool and informative video. I checked online the ball bearing kumano fins,
don’t think they make them anymore. So
many fins are either too loose or you have to sand them down to fit, so
if you surf without the bolt they might shift as you surf, unless you
are part of Captain fin where you get the perfect fin fit for your board
and then it is not much of an issue. With the issue of fin comparability, the Fin Thumb Screw (true ames) seems like the best option for me. -
